Decisions Decisions!

There is a book called Decisions Decisions. This decision making article is not about that! This is about a decision making model that works...

Decisions decisions - all those parts!

A question that is commonly asked is 'If I choose this, how do I know that I am not missing out on something better?'

It is often associated with the notion that 'A part of me wants to do this and another part of me wants to do that.' And most people feel comfortable with, and indeed, often use this metaphor. However, it allows for conflict and may even perpetuate it.

So how do people learn this way of thinking? When you consider that the language we use as we grow up has a profound influence on our experience, if we hear this 'parts' idea being used we accept it as being true and subsequently seek evidence of it. As such it often even feels intuitive for people.

Decisions decisions - parts are installed

There are therapeutic models built around the idea of 'parts' and one of the first things that occurs when using such models is the establishment or installation of the various parts. I say installation because these parts are not natural, but rather they are learnt. The writings of many cultures and tribes do not refer to such 'parts' and young children do not generate such ideas themselves. There is no such vacillation in their language or movements, until they have been exposed to it by others.

David Bohm, a brilliant quantum physicist from the last century, points out that such fragmentation is widespread, not only in society but also in the individual. And it leads to "a confusion of the mind that creates an endless series of problemsand interferes with our clarity of perception to such an extant that we are unable to solve most of them."

He suggests that this separation is an illusion that only leads to confusion and conflict. Bohm writes that the whole universe consists of interacting, overlapping patterns of dynamic energy that criss-cross and 'interfere' in 'a pattern of unbroken wholeness.'

Decisions decisions - all one thing...

When you learn how to operate as a single unit, everything aligned towards achieving an outcome, there is a sense of being whole and complete and well-formed. There is a certainty, a self-assuredness present that allows you to move in your chosen direction with confidence and clarity. Living is effortless and you are effective in terms of getting things done.

If you could operate this way at will, would your decision making be easier?

Would you be more comfortable and more able to make decisions of a greater order of magnitude?

And how would you extend this beyond yourself?

As humans we consider ourselves separate from others and we pay attention to the seeming differences between us. We function as individual entities and are within a whole system at one and the same time. We survive and prosper only as we develop the ability to operate individually within the web of relationships we weave for ourselves.

Decisions decisions - time and space

This includes widening the scope of decisions by considering how far from yourself the decision extends, both in time and in space. And a consideration of the implications of your choices for others, even to the extent of thinking of people we may not know.

To be able to do this requires a deepfelt sense of knowing, knowing both who you are and knowing your place in the grander scheme of things, so you have a sense of connection to something that is beyond you and beyond your ability to understand...

...and you hold who you are steady while the future that exists for you, but hasn't happened yet, unfolds all round you... so that you can align to who you are becoming... all the time doing, with precision and elegance, those things that are appropriate for you to be doing in order to create the experiences you want to be having... while you fulfill your destiny...

...each moment being so full and rich that your attention is not thinking about having your experience, but you are having the experience as you are having the experience...

Decisions decisions - differences

Like this, would you make decisions the same or differently than you do now?

Would you be doing different things or even the same things differently?

Would you know that you have made appropriate decisions, not only for those you come into contact with, but also for yourself?

"To get anywhere, or even to live a long time, a man has to guess, and guess right, over and over again, without enough data for a logical answer. "
Robert Heinlein - Time Enough for Love
